Finding a pair of riding pants that feels comfortable has always been a unicorn hunt for me. I’ve got a 31” inseam, so I need something with legs long enough that they don’t ride up over my boots when I’m seated. I’m also picky about materials: I’ll flat out refuse to ride if they don’t breathe and move when I ride. As an “All the Gear, All the Time” (ATGATT) rider, jeans aren’t an option for me. And if you’re wise, they’re not an option for you either.
I recently found the best pair of riding pants I’ve ever owned, and they’ve served me well in many weather conditions. BMW Rider Pants, which come only in black, are soft and easy to slip on. I usually wear spandex shorts or leggings under mine, but these pants don’t require that you do the same. They feature removable protectors at the knees that can be moved to three positions and won’t chafe your knees. They also come with removable hip protectors and double-thickness material at the seat.
The abrasion resistant cotton/polyamide material is fantastic and breathes well; perfect for spring, summer and autumn riding. Like your favorite pair of jeans, the rider pants also feature plenty of pockets: two on the back, two on the side and two cargo pockets. If it’s particularly warm, you can unzip the vents next to the cargo pockets on the thighs for extra airflow. They also come with a belt that cinches down and easily adjusts to your waist size.
Any pants can be comfortable when you’re standing, but what about when you assume the riding position? That’s my favorite part about these pants; they move when you bend your hips. The 50% cotton blend (also featured in the City Pants and City 2 Pants) allows for breathability and a little give when you move. Add in the Polyamide (also found in BMW’s Rallye suit), and you’ve got durability and abrasion resistance that will make these pants last for many seasons to come.
If you’re tall or have long legs, give these pants a try and take a seat in them. You’ll be impressed. You’ll also appreciate the removable liner that is breathable, windproof and waterproof. Unless you get caught in a downpour, you won’t mind riding in the rain in these pants. You can connect the Rider Pants to your BMW jacket via a zipper in the back.
